The track processor is responsible for attempting to correlate plots to existing tracks. This function is crucial in tracking systems, as it takes incoming data plots—representing detected objects or targets—and matches them to previously established tracks. The process involves analyzing the characteristics of each plot, such as position, velocity, and movement patterns, and determining whether they relate to any of the existing tracks in the system.

Once a correlation is made, the track processor updates the relevant track with the new information, ensuring that the data being used to follow the target is as accurate and up-to-date as possible. This continuous process is essential for maintaining situational awareness, particularly in environments where multiple targets may be present.

While the plot extractor focuses on gathering and preparing the raw data for further analysis, the target processor is typically involved in identifying known targets and distinguishing them from others. The weather processor, on the other hand, deals with environmental data, which is not directly related to track correlation.
